These data were compiled from various sources, including the State Statistical Committees of Russia and Ukraine, SovEcon (an independent Moscow-based agricultural research institute), and USDA estimates. Although the source data in some cases are several years old, cropping patterns are relatively stable from year to year. Note that the Baltic countries -- Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia -- are not members of the Commonwealth of Independent States, and were not included in the CIS Statistical Committee bulletin that provided much of the data for the other FSU countries. The source for the Baltic data was a 1990 USSR Statistical Committee bulletin.
