Central Asia includes four of the former Soviet republics: Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, and accounts for over 90 percent of cotton production in the former Soviet Union. Since precipitation in the agricultural regions is insufficient to support production of cotton or wheat, the regions major crops, agriculture relies heavily on irrigation water from the surrounding mountains.
