Facts About Agriculture in China - 2005

  • China is the world's largest producer of rice, wheat, cotton, peanuts, and rapeseed.  It ranks second in corn production and fourth in soybean production.  Yields for major crops are above the world average.
  • China achieves its high level of agricultural production through multiple cropping, intensive labor, high levels of fertilizer application, supplemental irrigation, widespread use of improved varieties, and supportive government policies.
  • Grain production in 2003/04 dropped to 430.7 million tons, the smallest crop since 1989/90, due to lower planted area and poor yields. For 2004, the Chinese government set the grain production target at 455 million tons and announced several policies to improve grain output, including tax relief, direct payments to grain farmers, and guaranteed prices.  In January the government announced that grain production in 2004 reached 469.5 million tons, up almost 39 million from last year.
  • Oilseed area and production are gradually expanding in response to good prices and rising demand.  Cotton area has recovered from its sharp drop in the late 1990's.
  • Despite its huge population  (1.3 billion) and limited arable land, China is nearly self-sufficient in food grain and is a major net exporter of many commodities, including animal products, seafood, tea, vegetables, and fruit.
  • Genetically-modified cotton has been widely adopted.
  • With one-fifth of the world's consumers and one of the world's fastest growing economies, China is a key player in world agricultural trade.
