Climatic features: Temperate continental monsoonal climate; long, cold winters; short, rainy summers; windy springs and autumns with unpredictable weather; low temperatures in the mountain area.

Average temperature: -20 C to -14 C in January, 16 C to 24 C in July.

Annual Average Rainfall: 350 - 1000 mm; precipitation gradually decreases from the southeast to the northwest; 60 percent of the rain falls from June to August.

Physical features: Three topographical zones - Changbai Mountains in the southeast, Songliao Plain the northwest, and hill, basins, and valleys in the center; volcanos scattered in the mountain areas.

Rivers: Di'er Songhua River, the longest waterway in Jilin; Yalu and Tumen Rivers, which form the boundary between China and Korea.

Lakes: Songhua Lake, also known as Fengman Reservoir, is a renowned artificial lake; other large lakes are the Yueliang Pao, Qagan Nuui, and Dabusu Pao.

Products: Corn, millet, sorghum, rice, wheat, potatoes, soybeans, sugar beet, sesame; silk cocoons, flax, sun-cured tobacco; mushrooms, edible fungus, ginseng; sable fur, antlers, timber, coal, oil shale.

Administrative divisions: 1 autonomous prefecture, 14 cities, 31 counties, and 2 autonomous counties.

Capital: Changchun
