China is the largest international market for U.S. food and agricultural products, accounting for nearly 20 percent of all U.S. farm exports. Since China joined the World Trade Organization in late 2001, U.S.agricultural exports to the country have grown exponentially – and FAS projects that long-term growth will continue. U.S. ag exports to China reached a record $26.7 billion in fiscal year 2013, with top products including soybeans, wheat, cotton, corn and forestry products.
The United States and China enjoy a history of collaboration in agriculture that dates back to the 1970s. Over the years, the U.S.-China agricultural relationship has grown and strengthened through high-level fora such as the 2012 Agricultural Symposium and the Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade.
The United States' engagement with China has encouraged that country to adhere to international standards and to adopt rational, forward-looking agricultural policies that benefit both U.S. and Chinese producers and consumers.
