  Vertical Legislation

 The European Community has followed a dual approach in harmonizing legislation on foodstuffs:
 
bullet Horizontal legislation covering aspects which are common to all foodstuffs such as additives, labeling requirements, etc.
bullet Vertical legislation regulating the manufacture and marketing of specific products

 


 Products covered by vertical legislation are:

bullet Cocoa and chocolate products  Directive 2000/36/EC
bullet Sugars Directive 2001/111/EC
bullet Honey Directive 2001/110/EC
bullet Fruit juices and similar products Directive 2001/112/EC
bullet Wholly dehydrated preserved milk  Directive: 2001/114/EEC
bullet Coffee extracts and chicory extracts Directive 1999/4/EC
bullet Fruit jam, jellies, marmalades, and chestnut puree Directive 2001/113/EC
