Semi-Annual Report 2009

In 2008 EU chicken production increased, fueled by rising export demand and internal consumption. However, the negative impact of the global financial crisis on meat consumption is expected to slow down broiler production growth to below 1 percent in 2009. In 2008, EU-27 chicken meat exports grew significantly (+ 16 percent), exceeding imports. Russia, Saudi Arabia and Ukraine remain the major customers for EU chicken meat. While EU exports are likely to be affected by the financial crisis, they may benefit from the slated 2009 Russian ban on PRTs. In 2008, EU-27 chicken meat consumption continued to grow despite rising prices due to higher feed costs. It is expected that consumption will continue to grow in 2009, albeit at a slower pace, as chicken meat is likely to partly replace more expensive red meat. (GAIN report E49020 - March 2009)

Annual Report 2008

Despite higher retail prices, 2008 EU-27 broiler production is expected to increase; however, production may slow somewhat in 2009. EU-27 turkey production will continue a downward trend. The EU-27 broiler trade deficit is expected to grow in 2008 and 2009 as a result of rising imports from Brazil and Thailand and declining exports to the Middle East despite increased EU restitutions. US poultry exports to the EU remain blocked by a ban on Pathogen Reduction Treatments (PRT). spacer(GAIN Report E48090 - September 2008)

Netherlands | Opportunities on the EU Poultry Meat Market  - GAIN Report NL7033 (December 2007): Due to CAP reforms and high feed costs, EU poultry production is under pressure. At the same time, the European Commission is enforcing EU legislation on imports. As a consequence, sector sources anticipate higher prices for poultry meat at the EU market.spacer
