Avian Influenza (AI) or “bird flu” is a highly contagious viral disease to which all types of birds are susceptible. Outbreaks occur most often in domestic fowl, with up to 100% mortality. The highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of AI is currently causing concern in a number of EU member states. All cases of AI must be reported by the member states to the European Commission and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). Even as very few cases of H1N1 were detected in wild birds in the EU since spring 2008, the European Commission’s Directorate General for Health and Consumer Protection (DG Sanco) continues providing regular updates on the number of outbreaks and an updated map showing AI outbreaks in the EU.
