The red color indicates vegetation in both of these two images that show the same intensively
farmed area. The 2003 scene clearly has less area under cropland (during the month of May
it is primarily winter wheat) than the 2002 image, taken at almost the exact same time of year.
Drought, winter kill and a late spring played a significant role in reduced area this season.
