Satellite image showing good crop conditions in the east, and very poor crop conditions in the west. A wildfire is visible in the Black Hills.
Crop conditions deteriorated in South Dakota during June 2002. Drought and hot weather during June has caused much poorer conditions for the establishment of spring wheat and summer crops, as well as maintenance of rangeland and pastures compared to June 2001.
Almost two thirds is rated as poor to very poor condition, compared with a more normal 5 percent.

The East Central District has seen more rainfall than last year, and about the same as in 2000.
Due to recent rain this area has the best conditions in the state, although still poorer than in recent years.
Conditions here are very poor, much worse than last year, with hardly any vegetation showing as of June 30.
While somewhat better than conditions in the Northwest District, conditions are still much worse than last year.

Since late May, conditions have deteriorated and are now worse than last year.
Conditions have been worse than last year the entire season.
Conditions are only slightly poorer than last year
Conditions are about the same as last year
Conditions are about the same as 2001.
Comparison of June 25, 2001 and June 20, 2002. Crop conditions in eastern South Dakota are similar to last year. Summer crop establishment lags slightly behind last year and the five-year average. In general, conditions are not as bad as the other three-fourths of the state.
Comparison of June 16, 2001 to June 11, 2002. Brown County and all the counties along the James River and its tributaries are somewhat favored by drier conditions compared to the excessive wetness seen last year, particularly around Aberdeen. Emerging summer crops appear to be about at equal levels. Fields of winter wheat, alfalfa, spring wheat, and pastures were better last year than this. Although vegetation is good now, continued rainfall will be needed to prevent crop deterioration.
Crop conditions continue to be favorable although soil moisture reserves are becoming low. Winter grains are in better condition than last year, however summer crops, hay, and pasture are in worse condition and could use more rain.
