With Kazakstan's grain harvest roughly 70 percent complete, yield is reportedly up 24 percent from last year, according to Ministry of Agriculture data cited by the Interfax news agency. As of September 25, farmers had threshed 11.2 million tons of grain, mostly spring wheat, from 9.2 million hectares. By the same date last year, 11.2 million tons also had been gathered, but over 11 million hectares had been cut and harvesting was 90 percent complete.
Yield for the 2001/02 crop, as of September 25, is reported at 1.24 tons per hectare (bunker weight, prior to cleaning and drying), up from 1.00 ton per hectare last year. This year's grain crop benefited from adequate precipitation during the growing season. The USDA estimates 2001/02 total grain production at 13.7 million tons, approaching the bumper crop of 14.2 million in 1999/2000. Sown area, however, was higher this year than in 1999/2000, and final yield is forecast at 1.10 tons per hectare (net weight, after cleaning and drying) compared to a near-record 1.30 tons per hectare in 1999/2000. (View current USDA estimates of 2001/02 grain production for Kazakstan.)
Weather during the past week was generally dry and favorable for harvest. The harvest should be complete by mid-October.
