Friday Global Crop Condition Brief

The following series of graphics highlight notable weather and crop developments in key production areas. Featured countries/regions this week are Australia, Argentina, and the United States.

Table of the Sept. 28, 2001, Global Crop Watch. Key weather events include a "hard freeze" across China's Soybean growing areas, favorable rain for wheat in Australia, Argentina, and the United States. Also, a light frost crossed the northern Corn Belt of the U.S.

Cumulative rainfall for Australia for the 7 days ending September 27, 2001. Drought in Queensland has hurt winter grains and is impacting the sorghum crop at planting and the cotton crop which will be planted soon.

A Cumulative Precipitation map for South America for the 7 days ending September 26, 2001. The rainfall in Argentina was very beneficial for winter wheat. Winter wheat planting was completed several weeks ago.

U.S. Palmer Drought maps, comparing September 2000 with 2001. Note the larger drought areas this year in the Pacific Northwest and the Far West. Also, New England has been drier. The big moisture improvements include Texas and the Southern Plains including Nebraska.

U.S. map showing 7-day cumulative precipitation through Sept. 26, 2001. Much needed rain fell across the Klamath Basin and the Pacific Northwest, much more is needed to end a multi-year drought. Also, rain eased dryness across the southeast and New England. A mild frost crossed the Northwestern Corn Belt, where summer crops were behind normal in development.

USDA FAS Surface Soil Moisture Maps comparing "surface moisture" for Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas during September 2000 and September 2001. Moisture this year favors winter wheat planting and establishment. Last year most of the region was suffering from drought until late October and the winter wheat growing season got off to a "poor start".
Winter Wheat Planting Chart and Table for the Western States, comparing planting progress as of September 23 this year with last week, last year, and the 5 year average. None of the western states are having planting difficulties this year.
