Friday Global Crop Condition Brief

The following series of graphics highlight notable weather and crop developments in key production areas. Featured countries/regions this week are Northwest Africa, Australia, and the United States.

Global Crop Watch - September 14, 2001, Canada Wheat Fair, China Corn Fair, Australia Wheat Good, Mexico Corn Good, Argentina Wheat Good, EU Corn Good, US Wheat Planting - Good

Africa - Early Rain in Northwest. During the first 10 days of September 2001, very early rain fell across the Northwest, from eastern Morocco to Tunisia. Up to 1 inch of rain fell in Algeria. Winter wheat planting normally begins in November. Northwest Africa has suffered from drought during the last two growing seasons.

Australia Spring Showers - September 7 - 13, 2001. Beneficial rain in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia improved prospects for winter crops in the vegetative to heading stages. Parts of Queensland are still unfavorably dry for summer crops. Light showers maintained winter wheat conditions in West Australia, more is needed.

U.S. Palmer Drought Index for September 8, 2001. Drought continues across the west. While still dry in Texas, Oklahoma and Missouri, that area received some rainfall this week. Eastern North Dakota remains soggy. Moderate drought continues in portions of South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. New England is also drier than normal.

U.S. Cumululative Precipitation through September 12, 2001. Beneficial rain fell from Montana to Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, improving surface moisture for winter wheat planting and improving pasture conditions. Rain also eased dryness in Missouri and Arkansas. The northern Corn Belt received moderate to heavy rainfall benefiting very late soybeans, but keeping the region rather soggy. Heavy rainfall continued for the third week from eastern Texa, across Louisiana and the southeast. Tropical moisture drenched Florida, even before Tropical Storm Gabrielle brought more rain on September 13. The Southwest remained seasonally dry.
Winter Wheat Planting Progress for September 9, 2001 across the Western States. Oklahoma, Washington, Kansas, and Colorado are ahead of last year and the 5 year average in wheat planting. Texas and South Dakota are ahead of last year, but behind the 5 year average pace. Montana is ahead of last year, but right on pace with their 5 year average and Idaho is on Pace with last year, but ahead of their 5 year average. This past week was very good for wheat planting, so expect this numbers to surge, next week.
