Northern Plains – May 2001

  • §Warm and drier in mid-to-late May in the Dakotas, favoring fieldwork and spring grain establishment.  As of May 30, crop progress caught up with “5 year” average (includes slow 1997 and 1999 crops). – Condition mostly Good-to-Excellent.
  • §Wetness still a localized problem.  Drier to the west, deserves watching as the season advances.
  • §Montana is very dry.  Drier than May 2000 in most locations.  As of May 29, winter wheat is 13% Good-to-Excellent, 87% Fair-to-Very Poor.
