MODIS Satellite Imagery:  18-January-2006

MODIS satellite imagery from January 18 indicates fairly widespread snow cover throughout the Southern and Volga Districts, where roughly 70 percent of the country's winter wheat is grown. Snow cover was thin, however, in central Saratov and eastern Volgograd oblasts, and likely provided insufficient protection against the extremely low temperatures.
