As of September 20, only 1.3 million hectares of winter grains had been sown in Russia's Southern District, compared to 2.3 million by the same date last year. Fall planting in the Southern District is typically less than 50 percent complete by September 20. The Southern District accounts for about 40 percent of Russian winter grain area.
