High abandonment can result from severe drought during the growing season (and subsequent low potential yield making harvest economically unfeasible), excessive rain during the harvest campaign, or early snow. The percentage of unharvested wheat area in Volga and Siberian Districts ranges from below 5 percent to above 20 percent and averages around 10 percent. In 1998, abandonment soared to 40 percent in the Volga District due to severe drought.
