Soybean and Products Demand for Southeast Asia In 1999/2000

Demand for soybeans and products is expected to recover slightly in the near future. Early forecasts show that for all the countries in the region, real GDP growth will be positive in 2000. Preliminary estimates for 1999 indicate that with the exception of Indonesia (negative GDP growth rate), most of the countries in the region will either experience a zero growth rate or small positive growth rates. The expected positive growth rates for real GDP, although small, are expected to have a beneficial effect on consumption and imports of soybeans and products. This effect is expected to be compounded by the lower world prices of soybeans due to abundant supplies.
