Situation and Outlook - December 2002
World oilseed production for 2002/03 is projected to
total 321.7 million tons, up slightly from last month’s projection, due to
increases in rapeseed, sunflowerseed, and palm kernel production that offset
decreases in cottonseed, peanut, and copra production.
Estimates for 2002/03 sunflowerseed production in Eastern Europe
increased 50,000 tons this month to 2.6 million tons. Likewise, a 280,000-ton increase in Canada’s rapeseed
production more than offsets the 100,000 ton expected decrease in Australia’s
rapeseed production.
World exports of oilseeds
for 2002/03 were raised this month to 72.0 million tons, mainly due to a 272,000
ton increase in U.S. soybean exports. Minor
downward revisions in cottonseed and copra exports offset upward revisions in
peanut, sunflowerseed, and rapeseed exports.
Production estimates for
major vegetable oils also rose slightly this month to 92.2 million tons, mainly
due to a 300,000-ton increase in Indonesia’s palm oil production forecast.
Much of the increase in global palm oil supply is forecast to be imported
by Russia and Hong Kong. Global
exports of total edible oils, however, remained fairly constant from last
month’s estimate, with small decreases in the estimates for soybean oil and
coconut oil exports offsetting the increase in palm oil exports.
