Summary
U.S. oilseed production for 1997/98 is projected at a record 84.7 million tons, up 536,000 tons this month and up nearly 10 million tons from last year. A 388,000 ton increase in the soybean crop to 74.5 million tons accounts for most of the change. Slightly better yields are indicated in the eastern Corn Belt States, with national yields estimated at 2.6 tons per hectare (39.2 bushels per acre), second only to 1994/95.
U.S. soybean crush and export prospects were both raised this month to 40.8 million and 26.7 million tons, respectively. Both are records. Improved demand prospects for soybean meal in China and for soybeans in the European Union more than offset larger South American crops and small declines in soybean and soybean meal imports by Southeast Asian countries because of recent sharp currency devaluations. Much of the gain in South American soybean crops is added to carryover stocks next September, which would hurt U.S. exports early in the 1998/99 season. Meanwhile, very low South American soybean supplies and a slightly delayed Indian soybean crop are providing a strong early-season lift to 1997/98 U.S. soybean and product exports. China's soybean meal imports are increased this month to 3.75 million tons for 1996/97 and to 4.5 million tons in 1997/98, each up 500,000 tons from last month. China's soybean oil imports are unchanged for 1997/98 at 1.75 million tons.
U.S. season-average farm prices are increased this month to $5.90 to $6.90 per bushel, based on a slightly smaller projected soybean carryout of 255 million bushels and the assumption that farmers will market a large share of the crop in the first half of the marketing year when prices are expected to be strongest. Soybean meal and oil prices are up slightly at $200 to $225 per short ton, and 23.5 to 26.5 cents per pound, respectively.
World oilseed production for 1997/98 is projected at a record 279.8 million tons, up 3.4 million tons from last month and 21 million tons above last year. Global soybean production of 149.2 million tons is up 2.0 million tons from last month as planting prospects improve in South America. A revision in the historical African peanut production data series accounts for much of the remaining change this month. Much of the South American production increase is added to September 1998 stocks, lifting projected world inventories of all oilseeds to 22.0 million tons, up 400,000 tons from last month but well below the 27.2 million tons in 1994/95. Soybean crush was increased in the EU, Brazil, and the United States, bringing global soybean crush to a record 122.5 million tons, up about 6 million from last year.
Soybeans
The 1997/98 world soybean production forecast was increased 1.9 million tons this month to 149.2 million tons reflecting increases in the United States, Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. Forecast world soybean exports for the period were also higher, rising 369,000 tons to 38.9 million tons. Increased export estimates for the U.S. and Paraguay accounted for much of the change. The 1997/98 world ending stocks forecast was also raised this month based on larger U.S. supplies and stock adjustments.
With increased soybean production, forecast production of soybean meal and oil were also increased this month. Soybean meal production for 1997/98 is forecast at 97.5 million tons, up 839,000 tons for last month. World exports are also forecast higher at 35.5 million tons. Brazil's soybean meal exports are raised in response to expected larger supplies and increased foreign demand for soybean meal. On the import side, an increase in China's soybean meal imports for 1997/98 more than offset a reduction in forecast soybean meal imports for Southeast Asia and the EU. World soybean oil production in 1997/98 is forecast at 22.0 million tons, up 190,000 tons from October's estimate. Exports were raised slightly this month to 6.3 million tons based on expected growth in soybean oil demand in China for 1997/98. World soybean oil ending stocks for 1997/98 are forecast at 2.3 million tons, up 3 percent from last month's estimate due to higher carry-over stocks expected in Brazil and Argentina.
Soybean Highlights
The 1997 U.S. soybean production estimate was increased 388,000 tons this month to 74.5 million tons. Forecast 1997/98 exports were also raised 544,000 tons this month to 26.7 million tons reflecting the strong export pace of recent weeks. Exports are expected to remain brisk through February 1998 as strong world demand and tight South American supplies leaves the U.S. as the only major supplier with exportable soybean. U.S. soybean crush was increased in response to a slight rise in domestic use of soybean meal and soybean oil. Larger export and crush forecasts reduced the September 1998 carry over stocks more than 5 percent to 6.9 million tons this month.
Brazil's 1997/98 soybean production forecast was increased 1.0 million tons to 29.0 million tons in response to a record soybean planting this season coupled with expected higher yields. Forecast 1997/98 exports are reduced 250,000 tons to 7.1 million tons reflecting recent import policy changes and lagging soybean import activities. Domestic crush was raised 400,000 tons to 20.6 million tons. A larger crush forecast and corresponding increase in meal and oil production have raised soybean meal and soybean oil export forecasts to 10.9 million and 1.4 million tons, respectively.
Argentina's 1997/98 soybean production forecast was raised 300,000 tons to 14.5 million tons this month due to an increase in area planted. Total soybean area is forecast to reach a record 6.6 million hectares. Brisk demand for soybeans and products resulted in lower ending stocks for 1996/97 which are expected to be replenished to more normal levels in 1997/98 from the additional supplies expected in the coming year. Argentina's soybean import forecast for 1997/98 is unchanged this month at 400,000 tons.
Paraguay's 1997/98 soybean production is forecast at 2.8 million tons, up 100,000 tons from last month's level and 200,000 tons above the 1996/97 production level. Soybean exports are forecast at 1.8 million tons for 1997/98, up 75,000 tons in November while crush was increased 25,000 tons to 950,000 tons.
EU-15 soybean imports for 1997/98 are forecast at 15.5 million tons (including intra-trade), up 450,000 tons in response to the high volume of U.S. exports to the region. Imports for 1996/97 were also increased this month to 15.4 million tons. With the increase in soybeans expected for the EU, soybean crush was also increased for 1996/97 and 1997/98 with a corresponding reduction in soybean meal imports for both years. Total soybean meal consumption for both years was nearly unchanged at 22.6 and 23.2 million tons respectively. On the oil side, increased soybean oil production, up 74,000 tons in 1997/98, was equally divided between exports and domestic consumption.
For the 1996/97 marketing year, China's soybean oil import estimate was increased to 1.7 million tons based on primary exporter shipment data. For the same year, soybean meal imports were increased to 3.8 million tons. For 1997/98, China's soybean meal import forecast was increased 500,000 tons to 4.5 million tons due to the expected strength of imports from India, Argentina and Brazil.
Other Oilseeds
World oilseed production, excluding soybeans, was increased 1.5 million tons in November to 130.7 million tons. Nearly all of this increase was due to an adjustment in Nigeria's peanut production numbers which reflected changes in historic and current production estimates. Other changes this month include an increase in world cottonseed production to 35.0 million tons, and a decline in world sunflowerseed production to 25.2 million tons. Forecast world oilseed crush, excluding soybeans, was increased 960,000 tons to 104.5 million tons. Increased peanut crush in Nigeria, up 1.3 million tons, accounted for most of the increase. Other changes include reductions in cottonseed and sunflowerseed crush.
World protein meal production, excluding soybean meal, was increased 296,000 tons in November to 57.4 million tons. An increase in peanut meal production in Nigeria accounted for most of the change. Reduced cottonseed and palm kernel meal forecasts were also noted this month. World vegetable and marine oil production, excluding soybean oil, was increased 497,000 tons to 55.0 million tons. Increased peanut oil production in Nigeria accounted for nearly all of the increase.
Other Oilseed Highlights
The 1997/98 cottonseed production estimate in Pakistan was reduced 100,000 tons to 3.4 million tons. Production is forecast lower as several weeks of heavy rains in the Punjab and less intense rains in the Sindh have reduced yields. This reduction is expected to result in a corresponding lowering of cottonseed crush in 1997/98 and cottonseed meal and oil production for the coming year.
The 1997/98 cottonseed production estimate in China was increased 200,000 tons to 7.1 million tons as reports from several provinces show improved cotton production. Expectations are that this additional production will be used in feed or other uses.
Nigeria's peanut production was adjusted higher this month as part of an overall adjustment in the country's peanut supply and distribution series. Current estimates are for production to reach 1.8 million tons. This increase is not expected to have much impact on world peanut markets as nearly all of Nigeria's production is destined for domestic markets either as animal feed or for human consumption.
The cottonseed production forecast for the United States was increased in November to 6.6 million tons in response to reports of larger cotton yields in 1997. This additional production is forecast to be equally divided between feed use, crush, and ending stocks with a small amount destined for export.
Turkey's cottonseed production forecast was reduced this month in response to cool and wet harvest conditions across the Aegean and Southeast region. The poor weather was expected to negatively effect cottonseed yields with total production for 1997 reaching 1.1 million tons. The decline in production was nearly equally split between feed, seed, and waste, down 80,000 tons, and crush, down 55,000 tons.
Romania's sunflowerseed production forecast for 1997 was reduced 100,000 tons to 1.0 million tons. Disease problems with this year's crop coupled with poor harvest weather led to the decline. Little impact on world markets is expected as all of the shortage will fall on the domestic market with reduced crush and lower sunflowerseed meal and oil production.
