CHINA SOYBEAN MEAL CONSUMPTION GROWS IN 1997/98

China's soybean meal consumption is expected to grow to 52 percent of total meal consumption in 1997/98. This is up from 47 percent in 1996/97 and 34 percent in 1994/95. Through the period, nearly all of the growth in China's protein meal consumption has resulted from increased soybean meal useage. Consumption of other protein meals has remained essentially unchanged (see table 18). In 1997/98, reduced peanut production will result in a nearly 400,000 ton decline in peanut meal consumption. This is expected to further boost imports and consumption of soybean meal in the coming year.
