SUMMARY
U.S. oilseed production for 1996/97 is forecast at 75.2 million tons, up 1.7 million from last month and about 6 million from last year. Most of this month's gain is in soybeans, forecast at 65.4 million tons or 2,403 million bushels. Yields in many states are above earlier forecasts because of favorable late-season growing conditions.
U.S. soybean crush and exports for 1996/97 are raised this month, helped by larger U.S. availabilities and stronger export demand. Forecast imports by China are increased for both soybeans and soybean meal to 1.0 and 1.6 million tons, respectively. Forecast EU imports are increased slightly, but are still below the previous year's level. U.S. exports also will benefit from a reduction in Argentina's forecast soybean crop to 13.0 million tons from last month's 13.5 million tons.
U.S. season-average soybean prices are forecast at $6.15 to $6.85 per bushel, down 6 percent from last month. Soybean meal prices are lowered also, to a range of $210 to 225 per short ton. Soybean oil prices are lowered at 22.0 to 23.5 cents per pound.
Global oilseed production in 1996/97 is forecast at 257.3 million tons, essentially unchanged from last month. Larger U.S. oilseed crops offset a small drop in foreign production to 182.1 million tons. Key foreign declines are in Argentina's soybean crop, Pakistan's cottonseed production, and Russia's sunflowerseed crop. In Argentina, forecast 1996/97 soybean production was reduced 500,000 tons from the previous month's estimate due to a reduced yield estimate in November. Production is still expected to exceed last year's level by 360,000 tons due to increased plantings and somewhat larger yields compared to 1995/96. Cottonseed production in Pakistan is lowered 220,000 tons this month to 3.1 million tons on reports of increased insect damage associated with the current crop. Russia's sunflowerseed production estimate for 1996 was reduced an additional 400,000 tons this month to 3.0 million tons as early harvest statistics indicate a smaller than expected yield following this seasons hot, dry weather. However, increased sunflowerseed production expected in Argentina, up 500,000 tons to 5.0 million tons for 1996/97, more than offset this month's decline in Russia.
Soybeans
World soybean production in 1996/97 is forecast at 133.7 million tons, up slightly from last month's forecast. The U.S. soybean production forecast was raised 1.5 million tons in November reflecting higher yields. U.S. soybean yields are currently estimated at 2.55 tons per hectare for the 1996 crop. Argentina's soybean production forecast was lowered 500,000 tons this month due to a lower expected yield. Impacting Argentine yields is the expectation of a higher percentage of second crop soybeans following the larger wheat area planted this year.
The global soybean export forecast for 1996/97 was increased 245,000 tons this month to 32.7 million tons. World exports are projected 3 percent above the 1995/96 estimate and reflect strong demand and increased availabilities this year. Argentina's soybean export forecast for the coming year was reduced 300,000 tons reflecting the lower production forecast noted above. Continued strong demand for U.S. soybeans coupled with a boost in this season's production forecast led to a 545,000-ton increase in the U.S. soybean export forecast this month. Total U.S. exports for 1996/97 are forecast to reach 23.7 million tons.
World 1996/97 soybean imports are forecast to increase to 32.4 million tons reflecting a rise in demand for both China and Germany. China's soybean needs have prompted recent soybean purchases from the United States. Total U.S. soybean export commitments to China through November 7 total 848,800 tons compared to 80,000 tons at this time last year. Germany's tighter domestic rapeseed supply situation is expected to result in an increase in soybean imports in 1996/97 to 2.9 million tons.
Forecast global soybean crush is projected to increase to 113.0 million tons reflecting increases in the United States, China, and Germany. Crush in China and Germany were increased this month due to the increase in forecast imports while in the United States, soybean crush was increased in conjunction with the increase in forecast production this season. Total soybean crush in the United States is expected to reach 37.8 million tons, up 409,000 tons from the October estimate and 1.5 percent from 1995/96. World soybean ending stocks in 1996/97 are forecast higher at 18.0 million tons reflecting increased supplies in the United States.
The world soybean meal production forecast was increased 597,000 tons to 89.7 million tons in response to the projected increase in soybean crush noted above. The meal production forecast is 0.7 percent ahead of the October forecast and reflects increases in the United States, up 346,000 tons to 30.0 million tons, Germany, up 189,000 tons to 2.3 million tons, and China, up 81,000 tons to 6.2 million tons.
Global 1996/97 soybean meal exports are forecast at 32.6 million tons, unchanged from last month's level due to offsetting adjustments between the United States and China. The U.S. soybean meal export forecast was raised mirroring larger supplies and continued strong foreign demand. However, this increase was offset by a 200,000-ton reduction in China's soybean meal export estimate for both 1995/96 and 1996/97. The global 1996/97 soybean meal import forecast was increased this month to 32.4 million tons with much of the increase attributed to China.
Since 1994/95, China has clearly shifted from being a net soybean meal exporter to an importer as domestic demand for protein meal climbs. Official Chinese trade statistics show soybean meal exports in 1995/96 declining 92 percent to 100,000 tons from 1.3 million tons in 1994/95. China's soybean meal exports are expected to remain unchanged at 100,000 tons in 1996/97. On the import side, China's imports of soybean meal have climbed from 50,000 tons in 1994/95 to 929,000 tons in 1995/96. Imports in 1996/97 are forecast even higher with a 200,000-ton increase in this month's estimate to bring projected imports to 1.6 million tons.
Total domestic demand for soybean meal in China is expected to climb to 7.7 million tons in 1996/97, an increase of 871,000 tons from a year earlier and 32 percent over 1994/95 levels. This increase has helped boost projected total world soybean meal consumption to 89.7 million tons in 1996/97. In addition to the nearly 500,000-ton increase in China this month, consumption forecasts were also increased for Germany and the United States. World soybean meal ending stocks are forecast at 3.9 million tons in 1996/97.
World soybean oil production for 1996/97 was increased to 20.4 million tons. Most of the increase occurred in the United States where an increase in forecast crush for 1996/97 resulted in a 77,000-ton increase in projected soybean oil production to 7.1 million tons.. The world soybean oil export forecast was increased slightly to 5.7 million tons reflecting an increase in forecast soybean oil exports by the United States at 794,000 tons. Global 1996/97 soybean oil imports were essentially unchanged at 5.5 million tons.
Forecast world soybean oil consumption for 1996/97 was increased to 20.2 million tons. An increase in expected consumption in the United States, up 44,000 tons to 6.2 million tons, accounted for much of the increase this month. Global 1996/97 soybean oil ending stocks are forecast at 2.3 million tons, nearly unchanged from last month while remaining 1.4 percent below the estimated 1995/96 ending stock level.
Other Oilseeds
Forecast world 1996/97 oilseed production, excluding soybeans, was unchanged in November at 123.6 million tons. A 304,000-ton decline in forecast cottonseed production to 33.4 million tons was offset by increased sunflowerseed, rapeseed, palm kernel, and peanut production forecasts. The decline in forecast world cottonseed production was due to reduced production estimates for Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Brazil, and Turkey. Partially offsetting these declines were increase in production forecasts for the United States, India, and Australia. The world sunflowerseed production forecast was increased 108,000 tons to 23.8 million tons as an increase in forecast sunflowerseed production in Argentina exceeded a drop in expected production in Russia this month. Other increases in November include a higher palm kernel forecast for Malaysia, up 50,000 tons to 2.7 million tons, an increase in expected peanut production in the United States, up 40,000 tons to 1.6 million tons, and an increase in Australia's rapeseed production forecast for 1996/97 to 580,000 tons.
World oilseed exports, excluding soybeans, are forecast to reach 10.7 million tons in 1996/97. Exports are up 791,000 tons from the October forecast due in part to increases in intra-FSU trade in sunflowerseed and cottonseed. An increase in the world rapeseed export forecast comes in response to slower than expected crushing activity in Canada and strong import demand for seed, particularly in Poland and Germany.
Forecast 1996/97 world oilseed crush, excluding soybeans, increased 428,000 tons in November to 100.5 million tons. Increases primarily in sunflowerseed crush, as well as small increases in forecast rapeseed and palm kernel crush this month, more than offset a decline in cottonseed crush resulting from reduced cottonseed availabilities. The world oilseed ending stocks forecast, excluding soybeans, was increased 226,000 tons this month to 3.4 million tons. Increases in cottonseed, sunflowerseed, and rapeseed ending stock forecasts accounted for most of the change this month.
Forecast world protein meal production for 1996/97, excluding soybean meal, was increased 307,000 tons in November to 55.6 million tons in response to increased sunflowerseed crush, primarily in the Ukraine. The Ukraine's sunflowerseed meal production forecast was increased 317,000 tons reflecting a larger crush volume fed by increased seed imports. In contrast, sunflowerseed meal production in Russia was reduced 102,000 tons as reduced sunflowerseed production, coupled with an increase in exports, reduced supplies available for crush. The increase in sunflowerseed meal production was partially offset by a decline in cottonseed meal production which reflects lower cottonseed production forecasts for Pakistan, Turkmenistan, and Brazil. Forecast world protein meal exports, excluding soybeans, were increased 56,000 tons in November to 15.5 million tons in response to increased intra-FSU trade in sunflowerseed meal and a larger cottonseed meal export forecast for China this month. Canada's rapeseed meal export forecast was reduced 50,000 tons this month in response to reduced crush. Forecast world protein meal consumption, excluding soybeans, was increased 260,000 tons to 55.6 million tons and follows directly from changes in meal production noted above. Ending stocks, excluding soybeans, remained nearly unchanged in November at 2.2 million tons.
Forecast world vegetable and marine oil production, excluding soybean oil, was increased 527,000 tons in November to 51.8 million tons reflecting increases in palm and sunflowerseed oil production. Forecast cottonseed oil production was reduced 64,000 tons to 3.8 million tons this month in response to reduced crush expected in Pakistan, Brazil, and the FSU. Malaysia's palm oil production was increased 200,000 tons reflecting improved growing conditions. In both sunflowerseed and cottonseed oil production, changes reflect adjustments in crush noted earlier.
Forecast world vegetable and marine oil exports, excluding soybean oil, were reduced 27,000 tons to 20.6 million tons this month. Lower export forecasts for sunflowerseed and rapeseed oil contributed to the lower export forecast. Malaysia's palm oil export forecast was increased 100,000 tons this month in response to increased supplies. This change, along with a 48,000-ton increase in the cottonseed oil export forecast, offset lower rapeseed and sunflowerseed oil exports. Canada's rapeseed oil export forecast was reduced 60,000 tons to 560,000 tons this month reflecting a lower oil production estimate resulting from this month's reduction in its rapeseed crush forecast. Sunflowerseed oil exports for Russia were also reduced this month reflecting the lowering of the sunflowerseed crush forecast.
With an increase in forecast world sunflowerseed and palm oil output, forecast global consumption of vegetable and marine oils, excluding soybean oil, was also increased. World consumption is forecast at 51.8 million tons, up 297,000 tons in November. Only world cottonseed oil consumption registered any significant decline this month, down 89,000 tons to 3.8 million tons due to reductions in cottonseed production and crush forecasts. The world ending stocks forecast was also increased this month to 4.2 million tons, due primarily to a 329,000-ton increase in forecast sunflowerseed ending stocks.
