On May 18, 2011, the fourth tranche of the fiscal year 2011 specialty sugar tariff-rate quota (TRQ) opened, allowing 16,537 metric tons raw value (MTRV) of foreign specialty sugars to enter the United States. This tranche filled very quickly. The fifth and last tranche, which is also for 16,537 MTRV, opens on August 24, 2011. The specialty sugar TRQ targets organic sugar, a type of sugar that has limited domestic production. Food processors require this type of sugar for their organic product lines for both domestic and export markets.
