Agriculture Committee

The U.S.-South Africa Binational Commission was established in March 1995 to facilitate bilateral cooperation between the United States and South Africa to ensure that key issues of mutual concern are discussed at the highest levels of government.

Agriculture was the sixth committee formed under the auspices of the Binational Commission. Other committees are the Sustainable Minerals and Energy Committee; the Human Resources Development and Education Committee; the Conservation, Water, and the Environment Committee; the Trade and Investment Committee; and the Science and Technology Committee.

The Agriculture Committee is co-chaired by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Dan Glickman and South African Minister of Agriculture and Land Affairs Derek Andre Hanekom. It's goal is to strengthen bilateral relations between the United States and South Africa on agricultural and rural development issues of mutual interest.

The committee provides a high-level, government-to-government framework to facilitate discussion and cooperation on agricultural programs, projects, and linkages between the two countries in the following areas: agricultural trade, investment, and development; rural economic and community development; agricultural marketing, regulation, and safety of food products; food and nutrition; sustainable use and management of natural resources; and agricultural economics, extension, and research.

Four working groups were formed to address agricultural issues and representatives from throughout the U.S. Government were invited to join:
