Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) puts the United States in a strong position to lead the way in completing major new trade agreements that advances the global interests of U.S. agriculture. The United States is already committed to multilateral and regional negotiations to liberalize trade, such as in the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). TPA clears the way for intense negotiations in these fora and others to begin. It also allows U.S. negotiators to take advantage of promising new opportunities in the future to initiate negotiations on other bilateral, regional, or multilateral agreements. TPA maintains the long-standing trade policy partnership between the President and the Congress, while giving the President’s representatives the credibility to negotiate tough deals.
