Blueprint for a More Food-Secure World To Be Unveiled
It takes more than good will to make sure that people are properly fed. It takes concerted, organized action.
By the end of this year, it is hoped that a blueprint outlining U.S. action to ensure a more food-secure world will be finalized and offered for adoption by the U.S. Government and civil society--anyone who works for or belongs to a citizen organization, association or business that pursues interests, values and ideas for the common good of society.
The blueprint, "U.S. Action Plan on Food Security," is intended to identify the priorities, actions and commitments that the U.S. Government and civil society will undertake together to strengthen what the United States is already doing to reduce hunger and malnutrition at home and abroad.
This document will be based on seven commitments that the United States, along with 186 other nations, agreed to adopt at the World Food Summit in Rome in November 1996. The objective of these commitments is to reduce undernourishment in the world by half by no later than the year 2015.
The National Consultations on Food Security, held this past May at 17 sites around the country, brought people together from all over the United States to contribute their ideas, experience and insight to the development of priorities for the U.S. Action Plan.
According to Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman, keynote speaker at the National Consultations, the consultations formed "an excellent foundation on which to build the U.S. Action Plan on Food Security." More than 700 people participated in the consultations at all 17 sites from coast to coast, including Hawaii.
Later this fall, public workshops will be held on a series of mini-papers that are being developed. These papers will draw from the key topics and possible actions that emerged from the National Consultations. These mini-papers will be merged into a draft U.S. Action Plan that will be made available for public comment and ultimately finalized for adoption.
Soon the dedication and effort of concerned citizens throughout the nation will culminate in the unveiling of a U.S. Action Plan that all Americans can be proud to call their own.
