West African Perspectives
Science and Technology Needs for Water Management in West African Countries The presentation will consist of five parts: (I) Facts: Introduction, (II) Priority Areas on Water Management, (III) Water Quality and Environment. (IV) Institutional, Economic and Social Issues and (V) Conclusions. The introduction will touch upon the status of world food production, food prices and investment in agriculture sector, and the roles of irrigation for food production. As to the priority areas on water management, these cover the technology development in irrigated and rainfed agriculture including climate changes, low-cost technology and water productivity. The presentation refers to the water quality and environment including wastewater treatment which should shed further light on agricultural water uses. In addition, institutional, economic and social issues would be focussed in relation to capacity building, gender, linkages to the markets, and investment. Finally based on the discussion of the foregoing, several points on water use technology and waste management will be provided as a conclusion.
