Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

June 21 – 23, 2004

More Crop per Drop? Alternatives in African Smallholder Irrigation

The question of whether the way forward is exclusively through improved demand management, more crop per drop or whether there should be a renewed emphasis on the provision of supply, more drops on the crops, will be mooted.  Four technological alternatives will considered:

1) formal or state sponsored smallholder irrigation schemes,

2) small multi-purpose reservoirs, a common property resource,

3) farmer owned treadle and small motor pumps for the exploitation of surface and groundwater, and

4) water harvesting.

The opportunities these alternatives present smallholders and the possible constraints to which each is subject will also be introduced.
