The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is pleased to announce
The Norman E. Borlaug International Science and Technology Fellows
Program (Borlaug Fellows Program)—Women in Science 2009 for female
citizens of Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Uganda, Zambia, Niger,
and Malawi. The Borlaug Fellows Program offers training and collaborative
research opportunities in international agricultural science, leadership and
policy. Training venues usually include U.S. universities, government
agencies, and international agricultural research centers. Each Fellow works
one-on-one with a mentor who coordinates the Fellow’s training and visits
the Fellow's home institution after completion of the training.
The 2009 Norman E. Borlaug International Agricultural Science and
Technology Fellows Program for Women in Science funded by the United States
Agency for International Development and administered by the United States
Department of Agriculture (USDA), Foreign Agricultural Service in
cooperation with the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA).
The application deadline for 2009 Borlaug Fellows
Program—Women in Science is April 10, 2009.
The 2009 program focuses on the countries of Ghana,
Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Uganda and Zambia.
Objectives:
Provide female agricultural research scientists, faculty and
policymakers with an opportunity to work one-on-one with U.S. experts in
the fields of agriculture, forestry and natural resources at a U.S.
institution or CGIAR center;
Provide scientists, faculty and policymakers with practical
experience and exposure to new technologies that can enhance their own
research endeavors;
Foster increased collaboration and networking between African and
U.S. agricultural scientists and policymakers to improve agricultural
productivity;
Facilitate the transfer of new science and agricultural technologies
to strengthen agricultural practices;
Address obstacles to the adoption of technology such as ineffectual
policies and regulations;
Provide leadership skills training.
Eligibility Requirements:
Female citizens from Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria,
Niger,
Uganda and Zambia in the early to mid-level stages of
their professional careers;
Good working knowledge of the English language;
Minimum Masters degree with 3 years practical experience or working
toward Masters degree with 5 years experience;
Currently employed at an institution in Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mali,
Mozambique, Nigeria, Niger, Uganda and Zambia with intent to
continue working in their country for a minimum of two years following
their return from the United States.
Program Structure:
Priority research areas: agriculture, forestry or natural resources;
U.S. host universities: To be determined;
Fellows will spend 6-8 weeks at the U.S. host university during the
2009-2010 academic year;
Fellows’ laboratory and field research will be conducted under the
supervision of a university faculty or research mentor;
Contingent upon availability of funding, Borlaug Fellows will
participate in a leadership training program either before or after
completion of the U.S. training;
