The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is pleased to announce The Norman E. Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellows Program (Borlaug Fellows Program) for Poland. The Borlaug Fellows Program offers training and collaborative research opportunities in international agricultural science, leadership and policy. Training venues usually include U.S. universities, government agencies, and international agricultural research centers. Each Fellow works one-on-one with a mentor who coordinates the Fellow’s training and visits the Fellow's home institution after completion of the training.

The 2008 Borlaug Fellows Program for Poland is administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS).

for Poland is July 11, 2008.

Objectives:

  • Provide Polish agricultural research scientists, faculty and policymakers with one-on-one training opportunities in the fields of agricultural research;
  • Provide scientists, faculty and policymakers with practical experience and exposure to new technologies that can enhance their own research endeavors;
  • Foster increased collaboration and networking between Polish and U.S. agricultural scientists and policymakers to improve agricultural productivity;
  • Facilitate the transfer of new science and agricultural technologies to strengthen agricultural practices;
  • Address obstacles to the adoption of technology such as ineffectual policies and regulations.
  • Eligibility Requirements:

  • Citizens of Poland;

  • Good working knowledge of the English language;

  • Minimum PhD degree or working towards PhD degree with 2-3 years post graduate experience;

  • Current employment or enrollment in a university, government or other research entity in Poland;

  • Early stage in their professional career;

  • Demonstrated intention to continue working in Poland.

  • Program Structure:

  • Veterinary science with an emphasis on both animal health and food safety.
  • Potential scientific projects that would be considered include, but are not limited to, animal disease research on dis3eases such as highly pathogenic avian influenza, blue-tongue, and vesicular stomatitis, including diagnosis, testing methodologies, methods of treatment, and epidemiological control; food safety research including diseases such as E.coli 0157:H7 and campylobacter, as well as residue testing and testing methodologies.
  • Fellows will spend 5–6 weeks at a U.S. university or international research center during 2008 (exact dates will be determined);
  • Fellows laboratory and field research will be conducted under the supervision of university faculty and research mentors;
  • Application Requirements:

    Eligible candidates are invited to submit the complete application including the following attachments no later than July 11, 2008:

    • Application form
    • One page program proposal
    • Approval of the home institution
    • Two letters of recommendation
    • Copy of passport identification page
    • Two passport-sized photos
