Ethiopia/Wheat Stem Rust

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is pleased to announce the initiation of The Norman E. Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellows Program (Borlaug Fellows Program) for Ethiopia on the subject of wheat stem rust. The Borlaug Fellows Program offers training and collaborative research opportunities in international agricultural science, leadership and policy. Training venues may include U.S. universities, government agencies, private companies, not-for-profit institutions and international agricultural research centers. Each Fellow will be assigned a mentor who will coordinate the Fellow’s training and will visit the Fellow's home institution after completion of the training.

The Borlaug Fellows Program for Ethiopia is administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) in cooperation with USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS), University of Minnesota/Cereal Disease Laboratory (CDL) and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT).

Objectives:

  • Provide two Ethiopian scientists in the early stages of their career with an opportunity to work one-on-one with U.S. and international experts in the field of wheat stem rust;
     
  • Enable Fellows to apply and transfer the knowledge gained from this experience in their own research programs and to further Ethiopia’s expertise on the subject of wheat stem rust;
     
  • Promote increased collaboration and networking between Ethiopian and U.S. scientists in wheat stem rust research.
  • Eligibility Requirements:

  • Ethiopian citizens in the early stages of their professional careers in the fields of wheat stem rust;
     
  • Good working knowledge of the English language;
     
  • Minimum Master of Science (M.S.) degree with 3 years practical experience at a research institution or working towards an M.S. with 5 years experience;
     
  • Currently employed at an Ethiopian research institution with intent to continue working in Ethiopia for a minimum of two years following their return from the United States.
  • Program Structure:

  • Priority research areas: wheat stem rust;
     
  • U.S. host institution: University of Minnesota – Cereal Disease Laboratory;
     
  • International host institution: International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT);
     
  • Fellows will spend 2 months at the University of Minnesota and 2 months at CIMMYT during the fall/winter of 2005/2006;
     
  • Fellows’ laboratory and field research will be conducted under the supervision of university faculty and research mentors;
     
  • Fellows and faculty mentors will participate in a scientific follow-up workshop in Ethiopia to be held in late 2006 (contingent upon availability of funding).
