Afghanistan

The Norman E. Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellows Program of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) aims to promote food security and economic growth by increasing scientific knowledge and collaborative research to improve agricultural productivity. Funding for this program is provided in part by the United States Agency for International Development and is administered by the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service.

NOTE: The Borlaug Fellows Program for Afghanistan is currently inactive.

Objectives:

  • Provide Afghan agricultural faculty, technical specialists, and research scientists with one-on-one professional development opportunities in the fields of agricultural teaching or research or extension
     
  • Provide scientists, faculty and technical staff with practical experience and exposure to new technologies that can enhance their own research, teaching, and technical endeavors
     
  • Foster increased collaboration and networking between Afghan and U.S. agricultural faculty, scientists and technical specialists
     
  • Facilitate the transfer of new science and agricultural technologies to improve agricultural productivity
  • Eligibility Requirements:

  • Citizens of Afghanistan
     

  • Good working knowledge of the English language
     

  • Masters degree preferred, but will consider applicants with a Bachelor’s degree and experience
     

  • Current employment in an Afghan university, or Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Food, or other government office related to agriculture
     

  • Early to middle stage in their professional career
     

  • Demonstrated intention to continue working in Afghanistan

  • Professional Development Areas to be considered:

  • Agricultural extension and methods of teaching, training and research in the agricultural sciences, animal and veterinary sciences, or natural resource management
     

  • Sanitary-phytosanitary and food safety practices for successful export of fresh and dried produce
     

  • Rehabilitation and improved management of rangelands and watersheds

  • Training Venues:

    Training venues usually include U.S. land grant universities, USDA, or other U.S. government agency, research facilities, not-for-profit institutions and international agricultural research centers. Each Fellow works one-on-one with a mentor who coordinates the Fellow’s training.

    Application Requirements:

    Eligible candidates are invited to submit the complete application including the following attachments:

  • Completed application form with photos
     

  • Approval of the home institution
     

  • Two letters of recommendation
     

  • Copy of transcript of college degrees, or copy of diploma, or other certification of degree
