The African
Organic Certification Program supported
the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA)
and the commitment made to support organic certification
systems in the region. The program focused
on:
-
improving production methods and
systems
-
revising certification
guidelines and regulations in order to address small holder concerns
-
advancing U.S. market access
priorities
-
facilitating two-way trade
between U.S. and AGOA countries
To date,
15 African scientists
and researchers from Benin, Burkina Faso,
Niger, Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, Senegal, and
Tanzania have received training
and conducted collaborative research under
the Borlaug Fellowship Program. The Borlaug
Fellows who completed the program will help increase awareness
of the health, environmental and other
benefits of organic foods within AGOA
countries.
