Latin America
The United States and
Latin America have a complementary
relationship based on mutual trade
interests. The market relationship is based,
in part, on the reversed seasons in North
and South America which allow for trade of
various seasonal crops year round. For
USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service, the key
objective is to reduce trade barriers:
tariffs, quotas, and protectionist measures. The Borlaug
Fellowship Program assists Latin American
countries in building scientific and
regulatory capacity to enhance agricultural
production, strengthen economic development,
and support trade between the two
continents.
El Salvador,
Guatemala, Honduras
Priority research areas
for the Borlaug Fellowship Program include
agricultural biotechnology, biofuels, and
agricultural diversification.
Ecuador
As part of the Borlaug
Global Cocoa Initiative, Borlaug fellows
from Ecuador completed research fellowships
at the USDA Agricultural Research Service
laboratories. Research topics include
formulation of bio-control agents of cocoa
disease, macro and micro nutrient impact on
cocoa, and production of disease-resistant
cocoa trees. The Borlaug Fellowship Program
collaborated with the World Cocoa Foundation
in providing the fellows with informational
training on the agribusiness aspect of the
cocoa industry as a supplement to their
scientific training.

Peru
The Borlaug Fellows
Program for Peru focuses on technical
training and post-graduate scientific
research in the fields of agriculture,
forestry and natural resources management.
Peruvian scientists have also completed
fellowships with emphasis on policy issues,
technology transfer, teacher education and
curriculum development in these sciences.
Guyana
In partnership with
USDA Agricultural Research Service and U.S.
land grant institutions, the Borlaug
Fellowship Program provides fellowship
opportunities in agro processing, plant
breeding and multivariate biometrical
analysis.
