Eastern Europe

The USDA promotes food security and economic growth in Eastern Europe as countries transition from the former Soviet bloc into independent market-based economies.  The Borlaug Fellowship Program assists in the scientific and regulatory capacity building effort by training scientists in the latest developments in agricultural research and policy.

Bulgaria

USDA assists Bulgaria with strengthening its agricultural sector by introducing promising Bulgarian scientists to the latest advancements in agricultural practices.  Specific research topics include avian disease diagnosis, biosecurity, epidemiology of exotic animal diseases, manure management, and integrated vineyard management.  Fellows will also receive training in agricultural performance management systems as a supplement to their scientific training.  The Borlaug Fellowship Program in Bulgaria is implemented in partnership with the Americans for Bulgaria Foundation and various U.S. land grant institutions. 

Kosovo

The Borlaug Fellowship Programs have provided fellowship opportunities to scientists from Kosovo in milk processing and handling, veterinary pathology, greenhouse fruit and vegetable production, and trade skills under the Central European Free Trade Agreement.

Macedonia

In Macedonia, the Borlaug Fellowship Program has trained scientists in genetically modified organism testing, detection of food contamination in both humans and animal feeds, analysis of soil moisture for irrigation systems, investigation and control of pathogens, veterinary medicines specializing in histopathology, and wheat breeding.

Poland

USDA’s Borlaug fellows from Poland received training in pathogen identification and prevention of respiratory diseases in cattle.

Armenia & Georgia

Priority research areas in Armenia and Georgia include livestock genetics, water resource management, and farm credit systems. 

Serbia & Montenegro

Priority research areas in Serbia and Montenegro include food safety, plant and animal health, agricultural biotechnology, and agricultural economics and policy.
