Selection Process

Step 1: Fellowship Announcement

  • All announcements are posted on the Borlaug Fellowship Program Website.
  • Applicants generally have 30 days to submit complete applications.*
Step 2: Prospective Fellows Apply
  • Applicants must use the application provided on the Borlaug Fellowship Program website. 
Step 3: Application Review
  • A panel comprised of Borlaug Fellowship Program staff, USDA in-country posts, and subject matter specialists review all completed applications.
     
  • Panel recommends candidates for interviews.
Step 4: Interviews
  • Recommended candidates are interviewed by one or more Borlaug Fellowship Program specialists.
     
  • Interviews are conducted in person, by telephone, or by video conference.
Step 5: Selections
  • Selected candidates receive a letter of acceptance from a Borlaug Fellowship Program manager. They will also provide the selected candidate with anticipated program timeline and program staff contact information.
  • Candidates not selected for the fellowship will also receive a letter of notification.
Step 6: Preparing for the Fellowship
  • The host institution (university, research institution, government entity) will contact the selected candidate to discuss travel arrangements,* housing, stipend, and assigned mentor.


* Please note, the application periods vary amongst countries and program category; therefore, announcements may be shorter or longer than 30 days.

* Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter the U.S.
