Host Responsibilities

Host institutions are responsible for designating a contact person who will coordinate all administrative and programmatic arrangements.  Responsibilities of the host institution include:

  • Developing the fellowship program curriculum

  • Matching the Fellow with an appropriate mentor*

  • Conducting an orientation

  • Assisting the Fellow with obtaining a J-1 visa

  • Coordinating travel and transportation between home country and host institution

  • Providing lodging and reimbursement for local transportation

  • Providing each Fellow with meal and living allowances

  • Purchasing mandatory emergency health insurance for each Fellow and educating the Fellow on what is and is not covered under the policy (e.g. no pre-existing conditions)

  • Maintaining open communication with USDA/FAS regarding logistical details, the Fellow's temporary contact information, program planning, etc.

  • Submitting financial and program progress reports to USDA/FAS in a timely manner

*Mentor Roles:

  • Works with Fellow prior to their arrival to develop work plan, coordinate site visits, and other arrangements

  • Provides guidance and training in the Fellow's research and studies

  • Plan a follow-up visit to the Fellow's home country within three months to one year after program ends
