The outlook for fiscal year 1999 (FY99) is positive for U.S. wine exports. U.S. wine exports (including cider, fermented beverages, and must) for FY99 are forecast to reach $530 million, up 4 percent from FY98. The United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, the Netherlands, and Switzerland are the top five export markets. During FY99, the United Kingdom and Canada are forecast at $139 million and $93 million, up 5 and 9 percent, respectively. Exports to Japan are forecast at $60 million, down 33 percent from FY98's record year of $91 million. However, U.S. wine exports to Japan during the financial crisis have not been as negatively impacted as originally expected. Additionally, some of Japan’s decline was made up by other export markets. Exports to the Netherlands and Switzerland are forecast to reach $116 million and $26 million, respectively, for FY99.
