A 15 percent increase in Sao Paulo’s orange harvest is expected to spur a rebound in Brazilian orange juice production, as higher amounts of fruit are available for processing. Total Brazilian frozen concentrated orange juice production for the 1998/99 season (Brazilian 1999/00 marketing year) is forecast at 1.26 million tons, an increase of 9 percent from the previous year. The large Brazilian production is expected to result in higher exports and stocks. However, the higher Brazilian production is expected to be more than offset by a sharp reduction in U.S. output. Total U.S. production in 1998/99 is forecast at 900,000 tons, a decrease of 19 percent from the record 1997/98 production. The lower production is expected to result in a 15 percent increase in U.S. orange juice imports in 1998/99 to 250,000 tons. Brazil normally supplies over 60 percent of all U.S. imported orange juice. However, despite lower production, U.S. exports are forecast to remain steady as the high stocks are drawn down to offset the decreased production.
