The value and volume of U.S. walnut exports (in-shell basis) in marketing year 1996/97 (August-July) reached records of $195 million and 112,000 metric tons, up 8 and 6 percent respectively. Higher prices due to a smaller U.S. walnut harvest and strong export demand, particularly in the European Union (EU) and Japan, were the primary forces driving the record export performance. Walnuts are the United States' second most important tree nut export behind almonds. California accounts for nearly all of the U.S. walnut production, with about half of their production going for export. Tariff reductions around the world resulting from the Uruguay Round agreement and various bilateral trade agreements have helped facilitate the growth in exports. Further, the Market Access Program has assisted the California walnut industry over the past 10 years in promoting its products in key markets.
