The first substantial modification was made to the 1996 reform of the EU fruit and vegetables regime. New rules were adopted for processed tomatoes, peaches, pears and citrus fruit; for aid paid to producer organizations and the management of export refunds.

EU - 2001 Budget for Fruit and Vegetables (4/5/01)
The EU 2001 budget for fresh fruit and vegetables increased by 15% compared to 2000 and decreased by 17.5% for processed fruit and vegetables.

Poland - New Sugar Law Supports Domestic Producers (1/17/02)
Poland developed a new Sugar Market Regulation Law which will regulate sugar production starting in MY 2002/03. It is intended to support domestic beet farmers and the sugar processing sector.

Croatia - Draft GMO Law and Government Anti-GMO Campaign (10/4/01)
The Croatian government has drafted a restrictive but temporary law governing the importation, use, and release of GM plants and food products. The government is also trying to reposition Croatia as an ecological haven, using an English language billboard campaign that includes a clear anti-GM message.

Czech Republic - GMO Approval Process (9/10/01)
A law detailing the rules and regulations for GMO approval was instituted. This law is onerous in appearance but has been remarkably flexible in its application to date.

Croatia - Biotechnology Law Now Being Drafted (7/20/01)
Croatia has established a biotechnology committee to write regulations covering the use and release of genetically modified crops. A draft law is expected this Fall. Croatia's Environment Minister would like to make Croatia GMO free.

Poland Sugar - New Sugar Law (4/23/01)
Warsaw Responding to pressure from the industry and farmers, the Polish Parliament passed a new sugar law.
