USDA UPDATES 2003/04 SUGAR SUPPLY AND DISTRIBUTION DATA

WASHINGTON, Nov. 26, 2003 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service today updated its 2003/04 world sugar production estimates. The data may be found at http://www.fas.usda.gov/psdonline/psdHome.aspx,  in the pre-defined tables under "sugar."

World sugar production for the 2003/04 marketing year is projected at 144.6 million tons, raw value, up 6 million tons from the May forecast. Consumption is increased 0.7 million tons, to 139.3 million tons. Exports are projected at 45.1 million tons, up 2.5 million tons. These increases and larger stocks carried over from 2002/03 are expected to result in higher 2003/04 ending stocks of 34.5 million tons, up 7.4 million tons.

Increases in projected 2003/04 world production are mainly due to greater production in Brazil and Asia, most notably India. Consumption is down in the United States, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa; steady in Central America and South America; and up in Asia. India accounted for one-third of the increase in ending stocks.

Estimated 2002/03 world sugar production is revised up 4 million tons to total 147.3 million tons from the May projection. Exports of 45.7 million tons are revised down about 0.9 million tons, and consumption of 137.7 million tons is revised up 1.1 million tons from May. The upward revisions are mostly due to higher production and exports in Brazil, India, Thailand and China.
