U.S. Exports of Horticultural Products Reach Record:
U.S. exports of horticultural products in fiscal year (FY) '04 finished the year at a record $13.3 billion, an increase of 11 percent over the previous year. Edible tree nuts, in particular almonds, led the way. The tree nut total value for exports for the year reached $1.9 billion, a 27-percent increase from 2002/03. The value of U.S. exports for wine and wine products reached $723.5 million, an impressive 20-percent gain year-to-year. Good prices and impressive sales helped grapefruit exports reach $242 million for the year, up 29 percent from last year. Despite a ban since April on orange shipments to Korea from Fresno and Tulare counties in California, the value of U.S. exports of oranges for the year finished 10 percent ahead of 2002/03. Canada remains the largest market for U.S. exports of horticultural products, finishing FY '04 at $4.1 billion, up nearly 8 percent from last year, and accounts for 31 percent of the total.
