The European Union (EU) Will Approve Application on Genetically Modified Sweet Corn in Late May: An Associated Press article on 4/27/04 reported that the EU’s head office will lift the ban on new biotech crops. After EU farm ministers were not able to agree on allowing sales of genetically modified sweet corn, the decision was moved to the EU’s executive commission. According to the EU’s food safety commissioner, the commission will approve the application of a genetically modified sweet corn variety in late May or early June. Over the last decade, U.S. sweet corn exports rose 80 percent to 60,466 metric tons in 2003.
