Export Summary
March 2001

U.S. exports of horticultural products to all countries in March totaled $954 million, an increase of 8 percent from the same month a year earlier. Categories with the most significant increases in March were fresh fruit (up 36 percent to $208 million), processed fruit (up 11 percent to $56 million), essential oils (up 7 percent to $63 million), tree nuts (up7 percent to $66 million), and wine and beer (up 6 percent to $61 million). The only category that declined was fruit and vegetable juices (down 11 percent to $65 million).

March exports to Canada, the largest market, were up 4 percent from March 2000, to $289 million. Exports to Japan and the European Union (EU) were up 2 and 8 percent, respectively to $168 million and $165 million. Exports to Mexico rose 15 percent to $78 million. Exports to Malaysia showed the most dramatic jump for March 2001, up 185 percent from March 2000, to $14 million, while exports to China rose 71 percent to $13 million. Exports to Korea rose 18 percent, to $41 million and exports to Hong Kong and Taiwan rose to $30 million and $26 million, respectively.

Exports for the October-March 2000/01 period were up 8 percent from the same period in 1999/2000 to $5.6 billion. Tree nut exports are up 23 percent to $675 million for the October-March 2000/01 period, while fresh fruit exports are up 17 percent to $1 billion, and fresh vegetable exports are up 11 percent to $636 million. The fastest growing markets for FY 2001 to date are: China, up 101 percent; Malaysia, up 66 percent; Taiwan, up 22 percent; the Philippines, up 20 percent; Hong Kong, up 18 percent; Mexico, up 14 percent; and the EU, up 11 percent. Exports to Japan are down 1 percent for the October-March 2000/01 period compared with the same period last year.
