Export Summary

U.S. exports of horticultural products to all countries in December 2000 totaled $919 million, an increase of 6 percent from the same month a year earlier. Categories with the most significant increases in December were fresh vegetables (up 21 percent to $121 million), essential oils (up 21 percent to $45 million), fruit and vegetable juices (up 14 percent to $59 million) and tree nuts (up 13 percent to $111 million).

Exports for the first quarter of fiscal year (FY) 2001 period were up 10 percent from the same period in 1999 to $3 billion. Tree nut exports are up 36 percent to $464 million for the October-December 2000 period, while fresh fruit exports are up 18 percent to $539 million, and fresh vegetables are up 15 percent to $326 million. The fastest growing markets for FY 2001 to date are Malaysia, up 49 percent; Taiwan, up 36 percent; Hong Kong, up 27 percent; and the EU, up 16 percent.

Calendar Year (CY) 2000 Summary:
CY 2000 horticultural exports totaled $10.8 billion, up 5 percent from CY 1999. The top 5 markets for U.S. horticultural products in CY 2000 were Canada, up 5 percent to $3.3 billion; the EU, down 5 percent to $2 billion; Japan, unchanged at $1.7 billion; Mexico, up 29 percent to $897 million; and Hong Kong, up 8 percent to $427 million.

The following categories of products showed the greatest increases in CY 2000: fresh fruit, up 14 percent to $2.08 billion; fresh vegetables, up 14 percent to $1.26 billion; essential oils, up 13 percent to $0.60 billion; and tree nuts, up 11 percent to $1.12 billion.

USDA is forecasting FY 2001 U.S. horticultural product exports at $11.3 billion, which would be a new record high.
