Smaller Canadian Grain Crops Create Opportunities for U.S. Corn

Canada's normal role as a major wheat and
coarse grain exporter will be diminished this year because of
poor harvests, and that will affect global trade patterns in
wheat, barley, oats, and corn. Australian and European malting
barley exports are expected to face much less competition from
sharply lower Canadian export sales.
Tight supplies of Canadian quality milling oats have already
helped push U.S. oats futures prices to the highest levels in
more than 10 years. This may prompt imports from nontraditional
countries and more EU sales at zero subsidy. Robust feed grain
demand, combined with poor coarse grain crops, will lead Canada
to import record levels of corn from the United States.
