WORLD WHEAT
SITUATION AND OUTLOOK
World wheat trade in 2000/01 is
forecast down 5.6 million tons from last year to 106.8 million.
Global production is down for the third consecutive year while
consumption is presently estimated to ease from last year. Global
stocks are forecast to fall 17 million tons thereby maintaining a
low stocks to use ratio.
Over the past month, export
quotes for #2 HRW FOB Gulf have dropped about $4 per ton to $131
per ton in early February. World wheat trade in 2000/01 is
forecast nearly identical to last month.
2000/2001 Trade Changes
Selected Exporters
- India up 200,000 tons
to 1.2 million based on sales resulting from the
governments decision to subsidize exports from
their large stocks beyond the end of their April/March
marketing year.
- Japan up 200,000 tons
to 600,000 due to a higher level of flour exports.
- United States down
500,000 tons to 30 million tons due to a lagging export
pace.
Selected Importers
- China down 500,000
tons to 1 million based on a slow import pace during the
first half of the year.
- Israel up 100,000
tons to 1.6 million based on a higher expected level of
consumption.
- Hong Kong up 200,000
tons to 700,000 due to increased flour imports from
Japan.
