NOTE ON 1998/99 U.S. PRODUCTION FORECASTS:

Planted acres reported in March 31, 1998 Prospective Plantings.

WHEAT: Harvested acres and yield for spring wheat (including durum) projected using harvested-to-planted ratios and yields by State for 1993-1997. Winter wheat harvested acreage and yield reported in May 12 Crop Production.

CORN: Harvested acres projected by using relationship between planted and harvested for 1995-97. Projected yield is derived from trend over 1960-97 period.

SORGHUM AND BARLEY: Harvested acres projected by using relationship between planted and harvested for 1995-97. Projected yield derived from simple linear trend fit over 1960-97 period. OATS: Harvested acres reported in March 31 Prospective Plantings. .Projected yield derived from simple linear trend fit over 1960-97 period.

RICE: Harvested acres projected using harvested-to-planted ratios by State and type of rice for 1993-97. Projected yield is calculated using the olympic average (high and low years excluded) for 1993-97 weighted by State and type of rice. The average is adjusted by the 1990-1997 yield trend.
