FOREST PRODUCTS TRADE POLICY HIGHLIGHTS - SEPTEMBER 2005 |
| Mexico Announces Final Rule for Wood Packaging Materials Effective September 16 | |
| On January 18, 2005, the Mexican Secretariat of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) published in the Diario Oficial (Mexico's "Federal Register") the final rule (NOM-144-SEMARNAT-2004) for phytosanitary measures for wood packaging materials used to transport imported goods into Mexico (Ref: MX4502, MX5501 & MX5502). The revised wood packaging materials regulation is effective September 16, 2005 and replaces the emergency rule announced on November 26, 2003. These measures are designed to bring Mexico in compliance with ISPM 15 of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) and harmonize regulations among IPPC members. | |
| Peru to Begin Implementation of Wood Packaging Material Regulation | |
|
On September 1, 2005, the Peruvian Government published Resolution No. 350-205-AG-SENASA. This establishes a period of implementation for Title III of the Peru’s Phytosanitary Proceeding Manual for Wood Packaging. Perú will inspect wood packaging materials (WPM) randomly. If the WPM has not been treated, they will be detained but the products will be permitted entry. Peru will have a period of implementation from September 1 though December 31, 2005. Beginning January 1, 2006, all WPM must comply with the requirements of Resolution 105-2005, which was published on February 28, 2005. We will provide a link to English language versions of Resolution 350-205 and 105-2005, or other appropriate text, if it becomes available. |
